The only place it wouldn't wear off (if it weren't for my my pre-assembly cleaning routine) is externally on the mil-spec/Colt rifle buffer tubes.

It really wouldn't hurt if I were to add that into my routine. Buy a can and give your parts a shot every once in a while, especially after a good cleaning. It wears and as you indicate, solvents will strip it away. If it was a lasting finish I would care more about it, but in my experience it's usually lost to my cleaning process in the prep for assembly anyways so it doesn't bother me when it's not there to begin with. If you're following mil-spec or Colt spec it's inside of the upper receivers, it's on cam pins, it's on the inside of carbine buffer tubes, it's on the outside and maybe the inside of rifle buffer tubes and some form of it is even sprayed on the outside of A2 stocks to make them look gray. Surprisingly I don't make dry film lube a requirement when I'm deciding on buying parts.
